Jets to trade Justin Fields after $40 million mistake to Chiefs unexpected deal

The New York Jets have been making a lot of roster moves this offseason, acquiring a ton of talent to boost the offense and defense after a rough season in 2025.

The focus has been primarily on defense, but the Jets have made two moves on offense, signing Dylan Parham and trading for Geno Smith to be their new starting quarterback.

With Justin Fields now out of the picture, it would not be a surprise if he were released. However, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Jets are actually in agreement with the Kansas City Chiefs involving Fields.

Jets to trade Justin Fields to Chiefs for sixth-round pick

"Trade: the New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources," Schefter reports. "Other teams were interested, but Fields' preference was to go to Kansas City."

While the Jets are sending Fields to a new team this offseason, what exactly are they getting in return? According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, it's a late-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, with the Jets landing a sixth for their veteran quarterback.

Fields was only able to be traded because the Jets are taking on some of his contract, with Connor Hughes of SNY reporting that the Jets will be taking on $7 million of Fields' $10 million guaranteed deal.

This is a phenomenal trade for the Jets, as there was a good chance that Fields would simply be released this offseason. Instead, they don't just get to trade him, but send him to the Chiefs for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft.

Fields didn't last long with the Jets, playing just nine games and throwing for 1,259 yards and seven touchdowns with only one interception.

It was not a successful stint for Fields in New York, and he now heads to the Chiefs to back up the best quarterback in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes. This is a fascinating trade, as for the Jets, it's a huge win.
