The future of LeBron James is shaping up to be one of the top storylines of the summer of 2026.

When he completed the 2025-2026 NBA season, it just might be his final run with the Los Angeles Lakers. It could also be his final run period.

At 41, LeBron’s still got it. He was voted an All-Star by his peers and continues playing an important role on a championship-hopeful Lakers team.

At this point, the veteran forward hasn’t hinted at which way he is leaning. He won’t rule out playing another year–but retirement is seemingly on the table as well. Only time will tell what LeBron will do in 2026-2027.

But if his former teammate, Dwyane Wade, had to guess, James’ decision would hinge on the results of the Lakers’ 2026 playoff run. And if all goes right, Wade guesses there could be more than one year left for LeBron to play.

“I think it depends on what happens,” Wade said when asked if this is LeBron’s final go-round. “I think it depends on what happens this year.”

And the max amount of years he has left?

“I think I think two,” Wade guessed. “I think he plays–I think he could play two more.”

Wade entered the NBA in 2003, debuting as a 22-year-old. He played at the highest level until he was 37.

Throughout his career, Wade played for the Miami Heat on two occasions, the Chicago Bulls, and the Cleveland Cavaliers. He shared the court with LeBron during stints in Miami and Cleveland. They famously dominated the league during their primes on the Heat.

As for LeBron, he’s been in the NBA since he was a 19-year-old fresh out of high school. James had two stints with the Cavaliers, a stint with the Heat, and is currently in the midst of year eight with the Lakers.

When the summertime hits, he’ll be a free agent.

LeBron’s Got Options

The Lakers’ mindset on LeBron has been rumored to be all over the place. Some reports have suggested they are ready to move on. Others have said they would welcome LeBron back, but the price would have to be much lower than what he’s currently getting paid.

Beyond the Lakers, LeBron has been linked to a possible third stint with the Cavaliers. Finishing his career where it all started doesn’t seem to be totally out of the question. In fact, it’s gaining more steam than a return to LA as of late.

In 46 games this season, James is shooting 50% from the field and 31% from three. He is posting averages of 21.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists.
