“Will he get in the team?” - Ex-England star weighs in on Chelsea ace completing Manchester United transfer

Former English star Chris Waddle shared his thoughts on Chelsea star Cole Palmer potentially joining Manchester United. Palmer has been heavily linked to a transfer to the Red Devils this summer.

Early reports in January suggested that Cole Palmer was keen on returning to Manchester. The Englishman reportedly wasn't considering a return to his former club, Manchester City, leading him to be linked to Manchester United instead. Palmer is believed to have been a fan of the Red Devils since childhood, and his current form makes him one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market.

In an interview with Ozoon, former Tottenham and England star Chris Waddle weighed in on Cole Palmer's potential transfer to Manchester United. He said (via GOAL):

"Palmer is definitely a talent, and I'm a big fan. I know he's had patches and hasn't been consistent since he went to Chelsea. Whether it's off-the-field issues or unhappiness in London, we don't know, only he can answer that. Chelsea have a massive squad, so he's rested, played, rested, and brought on. He probably wants to play every game, as players do. If he's a Manchester lad and supposedly a United fan, I'm sure he'd be very tempted."

However, Waddle shared his concerns about whether Cole Palmer could fit into the current Red Devils squad. They currently have the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo in their midfield, which makes Palmer's situation complicated if he were to leave Chelsea for a move to Old Trafford.

"However, with Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, you can only play so many creative players. Will he get in the team? Most teams, you'd say yes, but Fernandes and Cunha are in good form right now. Yes, Cunha can play further forward, on the left, or on the right, but he likes to roam. So, where would you play Palmer? But as I said earlier, United will have to clear the decks. There are a few aged players they'll probably look to get rid of," he said.

Cole Palmer is currently one of the most important players in Chelsea, and his departure could cost the Blues. However, with Bruno Fernandes being linked to an exit this summer, Palmer's chances to join his boyhood favorite side are not gone.

In April 2024, Cole Palmer notably scored a hat-trick for Chelsea in a 4-3 win over Manchester United. However, in the post-match press conference, Palmer admitted to TNT Sports that he's been a fan of the Red Devils since he was young.

"Yeah, when I was growing up, I was a United fan. I just think to try and do the same thing. I've scored away [from home] and a few here today, so I'm buzzing. I just try and take each game as it comes and show the Chelsea fans and everyone what I came here to do, and that is just play football (via Manchester Evening News).

Cole Palmer's current contract with the Blues runs until 2033. The West London side is expected to demand a massive price for the English midfielder for a potential transfer to Manchester United this summer.
