The Dallas Mavericks are heading into their Monday, March 16, matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans shorthanded.

As the Mavs prepare to potentially build a winning streak, they understand they could potentially be without the sharpshooter, Klay Thompson.

He is one of several names on the Mavs’ injury report for the outing.

The Mavericks are listing Thompson as doubtful for their Monday matchup. Once again, it was noted that Thompson is not dealing with an injury. The veteran sharpshooter is on pace to simply rest.

Since joining the Mavericks, Dallas has done what it can to keep Thompson as healthy as possible. The veteran sharpshooter has dealt with some major setbacks throughout his career.

During his days with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson missed two seasons in a row.

While there was plenty of doubt surrounding Thompson’s age 31 season with the Warriors, he proved he could still produce at a high level. He played three more seasons for the Warriors post-injury. He’s now in season two with the Mavs.

The Mavericks Are Struggling

Thompson’s expectations since signing with the Mavericks two summers ago likely aren’t being met.

When the veteran joined the Mavericks, they were coming off a championship run, which resulted in an NBA Finals loss. The future seemed bright, and a trio of Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson looked lethal on paper.

Unfortunately, the Mavs traded Doncic, Irving tore his ACL, and Thompson’s production has decreased in his mid-30s.

Last year, Thompson shot 39% from three, while averaging 14.0 points per game. He started all 72 games he played in.

This season, Thompson has appeared in 59 games, coming off the bench for all but eight of those matchups. He is making 38% of his threes, producing 11.8 points per game.

Trades and injuries have created a wash of a season for the Mavs. In mid-March, Thompson’s team is 23-45, sitting 12th in the Western Conference. They have just two wins over their last 10 games. The Play-In is a steep climb.

It’s unclear what the future holds for Klay Thompson in Dallas, but he’s currently in and out of the struggling lineup. The veteran missed the latest outing against the Cleveland Cavaliers. He’s on pace to miss three out of the last four on Monday night.
