There are many NFL fans wondering if Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is going to be ready for the start of the 2026 NFL season or not coming off a torn ACL injury. Kansas City finished with a 6-11 record last season. The Chiefs quarterback situation behind Mahomes this offseason was very murky with Gardner Minshew no longer on the roster.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Monday on Twitter, “Trade: the New York Jets are finalizing a deal that will send QB Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs, pending a physical, per ESPN sources. Other teams were interested, but Fields’ preference was to go to Kansas City.” Fields has one-year remaining on his contract. He did not play well during the 2025 season with the Jets. Fields completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,259 yards, seven touchdowns, and one interception. He also rushed for 383 yards on 71 carries and four touchdowns, along with averaging 5.4 yards per carry. Fields is only 27 years old and this is fourth different NFL team already in his career.

There are a lot of NFL fans who find the trade that sent Fields from the Jets to the Chiefs very interesting. There is a chance that he could be the Week 1starter for head coach Andy Reid if Mahomes is not ready to start the season. This is what some NFL fans had to say about the trade on Twitter:

This will be the first time that Fields will be getting an offensive minded head coach in his NFL career. This is going to be beneficial for him. Fields will most likely be the backup quarterback to Mahomes. However, he does need to be ready for the Chiefs in training camp incase Mahomes is not ready for the start of the 2026 NFL season.
Kansas City has made some interesting moves this offseason. They are still not close to being a contending team again in the AFC, but the Chiefs now figured out who will be backing up Mahomes next season.
