Veteran Cornerback Darius Slay Announces His Retirement Following a Historic NFL Career

Six-time Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay officially announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday, closing a 13-year career that ran through Detroit, Philadelphia, and Pittsburgh. The 35-year-old Brunswick, Georgia native shared the news through an emotional Instagram post, opening up about what the game gave him personally and professionally.

Known throughout the league as “Big Play Slay,” he finished his career as one of the most productive cover corners of his generation, recording 28 interceptions and 655 tackles across 187 games. ESPN insider Adam Schefter was among the first to confirm the announcement publicly on social media Monday afternoon.

Slay’s first seven seasons with the Detroit Lions built the foundation of everything that followed. The 2017 season alone made the case for him among the league’s top defensive backs.

That year, Slay led the NFL with eight interceptions and 26 pass deflections, earning first-team All-Pro recognition from the Associated Press. No other cornerback matched both categories that season.

His exit from Detroit was not entirely smooth. Lions head coach Matt Patricia told Slay privately that he did not consider him an elite cornerback. Slay later acknowledged losing respect for his coach.

Detroit traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles in March 2020, with the Eagles sending a third and fifth-round pick to the Lions to complete the move.

Slay signed a three-year, $50 million extension with Philadelphia upon arrival. Over five seasons, he earned three more Pro Bowl nods and was voted team captain in 2022.

He helped the Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 to win Super Bowl LIX in February 2025.

In his retirement post, Slay wrote: “I’ve been blessed to play the game I loved since I was five years old for an amazing 13 years at the highest level. Football was peace, my joy, everything. This game put me in a position to help take care of my family and loved ones and I’m forever grateful.”

A Pittsburgh Season That Quietly Signaled What His Final Decision Would Be

After the Eagles released Slay following the Super Bowl win, he signed a one-year, $10 million deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in March 2025.

The year went poorly. Pro Football Focus graded him at 58.6, ranking him 71st out of 110 eligible cornerbacks. Pittsburgh benched him and waived him in December.

The Buffalo Bills claimed him off waivers, but Slay chose not to report, informing the team he was contemplating retirement. His final NFL game was a 31-28 loss to the Chicago Bears on November 23.

The retirement video Slay shared Monday featured jerseys from every team he wore throughout his career. The Steelers uniform was the only one missing.

Before Monday’s announcement, Slay had already addressed his situation directly on social media, saying: “No team can call me but Eagles. No team can call me, everybody knows.”

Philadelphia never responded. The Eagles had already moved forward, building their cornerback room around Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean, and several new veteran additions.

Slay’s career earnings totaled over $119 million, per Over the Cap. He also leads all NFL players with 161 pass deflections since entering the league. Whether the Hall of Fame conversation gains traction in the coming years remains to be seen, but few corners from his generation lasted this long while commanding this level of respect at every stop.
