49ers to sign free agent WR to $6 million deal after career-worst season with Texans

The San Francisco 49ers are looking to build a contender for the Super Bowl in a very difficult NFC West. The Los Angeles Rams are gearing up to go all-in, and the Seattle Seahawks are defending Super Bowl champions.

To catch up to those teams, the 49ers need to improve the offense, and specifically the wide receiver room. They've already signed Mike Evans, a massive addition for the offense heading into 2026. But, they're not done.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the 49ers are set to sign a $6 million contract with free-agent wide receiver Christian Kirk. The former Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals WR is coming off the worst year of his career, but is still an interesting signing.

49ers to sign Christian Kirk for $6M

"Sources: The 49ers are signing WR Christian Kirk to a 1-year, $6M deal," Schultz reports. "Kirk is the latest WR addition in San Fran, after they also signed WR Mike Evans."

Kirk is 29 years old and has been in the NFL for eight seasons. While he's had some strong years, putting up 1,108 receiving yards and eight touchdowns on 84 receptions in 2022 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, this past season was the worst year he's had.

Across 13 games for the Texans, Kirk was targeted 52 times. He made 28 catches for just 239 yards and one touchdown.

It was 8.5 yards per-reception, by far the worst mark of his NFL career. It was also the fewest targets, catches, yards, and TDs he's had in a year where he's played at least 10 games in a season.

However, this isn't a reason for 49ers fans to be concerned about this addition. In the playoffs for the Texans this past season, Kirk caught 10 of 15 targets for 164 yards and two touchdowns in two games.

Despite the Texans' offense struggling mightily with C.J. Stroud's poor play, Kirk still had a solid playoff run across two games.

Kirk signing for $6 million is a very reasonable contract for the 49ers, and along with Ricky Pearsall and Evans, the new-look 49ers WR room without Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk looks ready to go for 2026.
