Arsenal have taken a step closer to £65m deal for player Chelsea sold in 2023 - journalist

Christian Pulisic’s stint at Chelsea was underrated. He might even feel he has unfinished business in English football, and now, Arsenal are willing to offer him the chance to prove himself.

Back in January 2019, Chelsea bought the 27-year-old American from Borussia Dortmund in a deal that almost set the Blues back a whopping £60m. He would remain at Dortmund for the rest of that season.

Over the course of the next four years, Pulisic would clock up 145 appearances for Chelsea and have a hand in 47 goals. That is despite only starting 83 of those 145 games while on the Stamford Bridge books.

Injuries hindered his momentum at Chelsea, and by the summer of ’23, after scoring just one goal during 2022-23, Pulisic left Chelsea and the Premier League to join Milan. Now, the American could return.

Arsenal planning £65m Christian Pulisic bid this summer

Over in Milan, Pulisic has been a revelation. Bought for less than half the fee Chelsea spent to land the former Dortmund ace, the 82-time USA star has laid on 67 goals and assists in just 126 appearances.

This season, Pulisic has gone to a new level in Milan colours. He has already hit double digits in just 26 games for Milan, described as “world class” by Jurgen Klinsmann. Now, Arsenal could make a move.

According to Italian reporter Marco Varini on X, talks to extend Pulisic’s contract have been put on hold due to Arsenal’s interest. His current contract expires in the summer of 2027 at the San Siro.

Yet, Milan are willing to listen to what Arsenal have to offer and whether they can meet Milan’s £65m asking price. Indeed, once deemed indispensable, Milan are also wary of the profit made on Pulisic.

Varini reported: “Milan have put the renewal of Pulisic on hold, due to the recent interest from Arsenal, a club that can afford the €75m requested by Aldo Roddi. The Rossoneri are making their evaluations.

“The American no longer seems untouchable,” Varini reported, suggesting Pulisic could move. “The player wouldn’t mind a return to the Premier League. An official offer from the Gunners is awaited.”

Have Chelsea made a mistake in selling Christian Pulisic?

It is hard to tell. Pulisic was a player who just needed to remain fit and perhaps, the slower, less intense style of Italian football allows Pulisic to be more explosive less frequently. It suits his body and style.

Or perhaps, Pulisic has grown in confidence in a Milan shirt and after his stint at Chelsea, is now proving himself to be one of Serie’s best attackers. Perhaps it was all about becoming a key player in a team.

One thing is for sure, he did not get the run of games and the confidence that comes with that, while at Chelsea. Fikayo Tomori claims Pulisic is one of the best players in Serie A at the moment. It says it all.
