Should Patriots Sign Six-Time Pro Bowler Going Into 14th Season?

The [New England Patriots](https://nesn.com/new-england-patriots) made a major investment at the receiver position and signed Romeo Doubs this offseason, but could use more help.

Doubs will enter the season as the Patriots' No. 1 receiver and will look to fill that role for the first time in his career. With the Green Bay Packers, he was part of a system built on spreading the ball and not having a true No. 1 option. Doubs has the talent to be a No. 1 in the league, but the Patriots could still use some help for Drake Maye.

The team moved on from Stefon Diggs this offseason, and he posted over 1,000 yards and led the team in receiving yards. It will not be easy for Doubs to replace him. Kayshon Boutte continuing to get better will help Maye, but the team may still be considering adding another target. They were reportedly interested in A.J. Brown even after signing Doubs.

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly not looking to trade Brown right now, and if the Patriots are interested in adding a receiver, they may be open to pivoting to a new name. There are not many stars left on the market, but Keenan Allen remains unsigned.

Allen could fill the veteran presence that the team lost by releasing Diggs. He is going into his 14th season and has six career Pro Bowl nods. However, signing him may not be wise for the Patriots.

He did have 777 yards last season on 81 catches. However, he is nearing the end of his career, and the Patriots may be better off drafting a receiver on Day 2 of the NFL Draft or allowing Boute and Kyle Williams to have bigger roles with Diggs gone.

Allen would be cheap, but the Patriots would not gain much, outside of leadership, by signing him at this point in his career. Other options on the market include Jauan Jennings and Deebo Samuel. Either of them may be a better option than Allen as well. Allen is just 534 yards away from becoming the Los Angeles Chargers' all-time receiving yards leader. He may only be looking to sign with the team that drafted him in 2013.
