UEFA rules ready to ban Sandro Tonali & Newcastle United trio as Barcelona duo escape punishment

Newcastle United team news: Four players could be banned should Newcastle beat Barcelona on Wednesday night.

Newcastle United face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday evening (5:45pm kick-off GMT) looking to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona at St James’ Park last week after Harvey Barnes’ late strike was cancelled out by a stoppage-time penalty from Lamine Yamal with what proved to be the last kick of the game.

It means it’s still all to play for heading into the second leg, with the winners of the match on the night securing progress to the last eight of the competition.

The winners will likely face Atletico Madrid in the quarter-final unless Tottenham Hotspur are able to turn around a 5-2 deficit.

NUFC quartet at risk of Champions League ban as Barcelona duo escape punishment

Sandro Tonali was shown a yellow card in the first leg against Barcelona, meaning he is just one booking away from a suspension in the Champions League.

Should the Italian be booked in the second leg against Barcelona and Newcastle progress, he would miss the first leg of the quarter-final.

Joe Willock was also booked after coming on as a stoppage-time substitute in the match and is also one yellow card away from a one-match ban.

The match saw Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez both escape bookings for cynical fouls on Lewis Hall. Had either Barcelona player been booked, they would have missed the second leg. If they are booked on Wednesday and Barca progress, they will miss the first leg of the quarter-final.

Joelinton and Dan Burn are also at risk of suspension should Newcastle progress, having been booked twice in the Champions League already this season.

Bruno Guimaraes, Aaron Ramsdale, Anthony Elanga and Anthony Gordon are the only other Newcastle players who have been shown a yellow card in the Champions League this season.

Those players would have to be booked a further two times in order to face a ban, though that would only be relevant if Newcastle were to progress. Yellow cards are wiped after the quarter-final stage to ensure players cannot miss the final because of an accumulation of bookings.
