Speculation linking Cole Palmer with a sensational move from Chelsea to Manchester United has intensified after former England winger Chris Waddle suggested the forward could be tempted by the chance to join the club he supported growing up.
Palmer has emerged as one of Chelsea’s most influential players since joining from Manchester City in 2023 for around £40 million. The Manchester-born attacker, who can operate as an attacking midfielder or winger, has established himself as a key figure for the Blues and has already racked up dozens of goals and assists since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
However, Waddle recently claimed the England international could find it difficult to ignore interest from United should the Old Trafford club make a serious approach. According to the former Tottenham and England star, Palmer’s childhood support for the Red Devils could make the prospect “very tempting,” even though a deal would be controversial given the rivalry between the clubs.
Speaking exclusively to Ozoon, Waddle said: “Palmer is definitely a talent, and I’m a big fan. I know he’s had patches and hasn’t been consistent since he went to CHELSEA. Whether it’s off-the-field issues or unhappiness in London, we don’t know, only he can answer that. Chelsea have a massive squad, so he’s rested, played, rested, and brought on.
‘He probably wants to play every game, as players do. If he’s a Manchester lad and supposedly a Manchester United fan, I’m sure he’d be very tempted,” Waddle explained.
He added: “However, with Matheus Cunha and Bruno Fernandes, you can only play so many creative players. Will he get in the team? Most teams, you’d say yes, but Fernandes and Cunha are in good form right now. Yes, Cunha can play further forward, on the left, or on the right, but he likes to roam.
‘So, where would you play Palmer? But as I said earlier, United will have to clear the decks. There are a few aged players they’ll probably look to get rid of.”
Would Palmer actually leave Chelsea?
While the idea of a dramatic transfer has generated headlines, several factors make such a move unlikely in the near future. Firstly, Palmer remains under a long-term contract with Chelsea until 2033, leaving the club in an extremely strong negotiating position should any interest materialise.
Secondly, CHELSEA’s management have publicly dismissed the notion that the England international is pushing for a move. The club’s coaching staff have described him as “untouchable” and central to their long-term plans, reinforcing the belief that the team is being built around him.
Palmer himself has also downplayed speculation surrounding his future, dismissing transfer talk as “rubbish” when asked about rumours linking him with a switch away from Stamford Bridge.
Finally, any deal would likely require a record-breaking fee given Palmer’s age, output and contract length. That financial reality alone could deter even the wealthiest Premier League clubs from pursuing a move.
