Former Chelsea captain John Terry has heaped praise on one of Arsenal’s most exciting young prospects, claiming the teenager reminds him of Lionel Messi after watching his rapid rise through the club’s academy.
Terry, widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s greatest defenders, spoke about ARSENAL talent Max Dowman during a recent interview and admitted the youngster’s style immediately caught his attention.
The former England international said Dowman’s balance, close control and fearlessness on the ball have echoes of the Argentine superstar who dominated world football for more than a decade.
Dowman, still only in his early teens, has been making headlines inside Arsenal’s academy system for his technical ability and maturity beyond his years. The midfielder has already played well above his age group and is regarded internally as one of the most gifted players to emerge from the club’s youth setup in recent seasons.
Terry revealed that after watching clips and hearing reports from coaches, he was struck by how naturally Dowman carries the ball and glides past opponents, He said: “Max Dowman, what a player by the way, 16 years of age, absolutely incredible.
“I watched him play against Chelsea about a year ago and I’ve not seen anyone glide past people like this man does, other than Messi. That’s a big, big comparison but this man is a proper talent and will play a big part in Arsenal’s future and also England as well.”
ARSENAL have become increasingly renowned for producing technically gifted players through their academy in recent years. The likes of Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe both graduated from Hale End and went on to establish themselves in the first team, providing a pathway younger talents now aspire to follow.
Dowman is still several years away from senior football, but coaches within the club reportedly believe he has the potential to become another standout product of Arsenal’s development system
