The exchange quickly turned combative with Jewish students and rabbis testifying about harassment after the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, which killed roughly 1,200 people.
Commission chair and Texas Lt Gov. Dan Patrick later said Prejean Boller had effectively “hijacked” the hearing to push a personal political agenda. Shortly afterward, she was removed from the panel. This move was backed by Trump.
The Religious Liberty Commission itself is relatively new. Trump created the advisory body through an executive order on May 1, 2025, tasking it with identifying threats to religious freedom and advising the White House on policy.
