Chelsea moves to sign Giant‘that will transform back-line’in blockbuster summer deal

Chelsea have reportedly made contact with Kim Min-jae over a potential move from FC Bayern Munich, as the London club continue their search for defensive reinforcements ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to multiple reports, officials from CHELSEA have begun exploring the conditions of a deal for the South Korean international after identifying centre-back as a key area to strengthen. Bundesliga insider Christian Falk is among those reporting that Chelsea have effectively “knocked on the door” to assess whether Bayern would be open to negotiations.

The 29-year-old defender joined Bayern in 2023 after the German champions triggered a €50 million release clause to sign him from Napoli, making him the most expensive Asian footballer in history. Since then, Kim has been a regular part of the squad, though competition for places and tactical changes have occasionally limited his starting opportunities this season.

Chelsea’s interest is understood to stem partly from concerns about depth and consistency in defence. Injuries and uncertainty surrounding several centre-backs have reportedly prompted the club’s recruitment team to target a more experienced presence at the back.

Reports suggest Bayern could be open to selling the defender if the right offer arrives. While the Bundesliga giants originally valued Kim significantly higher, their current stance appears more flexible as they reassess squad priorities. Some outlets claim Bayern would consider offers in the region of €30–35 million if serious bids are tabled.

Why Chelsea want Kim Min-jae

Kim built his reputation as one of Europe’s most dominant defenders during Napoli’s 2022–23 Serie A title-winning campaign, where he was widely praised for his aerial ability, aggressive defending and composure on the ball. His physical style and leadership qualities have made him a frequent target for Premier League clubs in recent transfer windows.

CHELSEA are believed to see him as a player capable of bringing both experience and defensive stability to a relatively young back line.

What fee Chelsea may need to pay

If Chelsea are serious about signing Kim Min-jae this summer, a realistic transfer fee likely sits between €35 million and €45 million (£30m–£38m).

On one hand, Bayern paid €50 million for the defender only three years ago, and the club will be reluctant to take too large a loss. However, his reduced role in the squad and the fact he will be approaching 30 by the next season both weaken Bayern’s negotiating position.

Chelsea’s financial strength could still push the price toward the upper end of that range, especially if other clubs enter the race. A bid closer to €40 million may ultimately be the figure that convinces Bayern to sanction a sale while allowing CHELSEA to secure an experienced international defender below his original transfer value.
