What people in football are saying about Everton's points deduction after new Chelsea punishment

During the 2023/24 season, Everton were deducted 10 points for breaching PSR rules.

That was actually a Premier League record, so it seemed an incredibly strong punishment at the time.

Everton were then hit with another two-point deduction in the same campaign, but they managed to win an appeal, so overall they were docked eight points.

Everton manager David Moyes.

With that said, there have been a lot of strong opinions around Chelsea’s recent punishment from the Premier League, as they avoided a deduction.

Chelsea have been given a £10.75m fine and a nine-month academy transfer ban.

Speaking on Miguel Delaney’s Inside Football YouTube channel, the journalist explained that figures in football are baffled by the level of punishment Chelsea have received compared to Everton.

“It’s maybe partly summed up by a quote given to me by one prominent football official, which is that ‘under Roman Abramovich Chelsea blatantly cheated and still have the trophies to show for it.”‘

“I’ve had people in football put things to me like it’s a ‘classic fudge’ that it’s ‘inconsistent’ compared to say the Everton case or the Nottingham Forest case.

“And then obviously there’s a question over what it means for Manchester City.”

The Premier League stated that Chelsea’s settlement was partly due to their ‘exceptional cooperation throughout the investigation’.

The league also said the West Londoners had ‘significant mitigating factors’.

Chelsea released a statement following the sanction, which partly read: “The club accepts the terms of the settlement in full, details of which have been published on the Premier League website.

“For clarity, the nine-month restriction on registering Academy players applies immediately, but only to Academy players who have previously been registered with another League or EFL club in the preceding 18 months.

“It does not apply to current Chelsea players, international players or players who are applying for their first registration at Under 9.

“We are pleased that the matter is now concluded.”
