The Patriots and Seahawks played a thrilling Super Bowl 49, with Tom Brady and Russell Wilson trading big offensive plays. New England had the edge, 28-24 after Brady led a 10-play, 64-yard touchdown drive. Wilson was game for the final two-minute drill, hitting on big plays to quickly move the ball 75 yards to the Patriots’ 5-yard-line.
Marshawn Lynch just missed scoring a potential game-winning TD on first-and-goal, being stopped by less than a yard short of the goal line. “Why didn’t the Seahawks just hand the ball to Marshawn Lynch again?’ remains the lingering second-guessing question. Instead, Wilson threw a quick pass in the middle to field to counter the Patriots’ run-stopping package. Butler, an undrafted rookie slot cornerback, recognized the route from practice and drove toward the ball to snatch it away from intended wide receiver Ricardo Lockette. Butler did it to kill the Seahawks’ probable win and give the Patriots a shocking victory.
