SN 140 Moments: No. 62 - Titans pull off Music City Miracle to stun Bills in playoffs

The Bills took a 16-15 lead in the teams’ AFC wild-card matchup with only 16 seconds left in the game and had to just survive the return of a pooch kickoff by Steve Christie. The Titans’ coaching staff was aware the Bills were short on depth to execute on special teams and also had the idea of designing the kickoff return like an offensive play.

Tight end Frank Wycheck had come through as a trick-play passer before, so Tennessee made sure fullback Lorenzo Neal got the ball in Wycheck’s hands after fielding the short kick at the 25. The Bills bit on Wycheck being the returner and were displaced when he instead laterally passed the ball to wide receiver Kevin Dyson on the far left side. Dyson darted untouched 75 yards ahead for the game-winning TD with only three seconds left.

The loud crowd at then Adelphia Stadium erupted and sparked the team to a deep playoff run to Super Bowl 34. In that game, a 23-16 loss, the Titans came up just short of another miracle when Dyson was brought down by “The Tackle” of Rams linebacker Mike Jones at the 1-yard line.
