This was the fitting end to an exciting instant classic AFC divisional playoff. MVP quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes (378 passing yards, 69 rushing yards, 4 total TDs) and Allen (328 passing yards, 68 rushing yards, 4 total TDs) played flawlessly and equally. The team with the final possession was bound to win the high-scoring affair, which the Chiefs eventually did 42-36.
The Bills thought they had the game won once, but then lost it thrice. Buffalo went up 29-26 with 1:54 left in the fourth quarter when Allen hit on a 27-yard TD pass to wide receiver Gabe Davis. Less than a minute later, Mahomes answered with a 64-yard catch-and-run to a streaking Tyreek Hill to make it 33-29, Kansas City.
Only 49 seconds later, Allen found Davis for a 19-yard TD, giving the Bills a 36-33 lead. The Chiefs had three timeouts with 13 seconds left, but it seemed impossible they could get into Harrison Butker’s field-goal range in two plays from their own 25. But the Bills’ defense broke down on short passes to HIll and tight end Travis Kelce, leading to 44 yards from Mahomes and setting up Butker’s game-tying 49-yarder. The overtime coin toss landed in the Chiefs’ favor and allowed them to win without Allen touching the ball.
