NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The NBA’s board of governors could soon vote on whether to add teams in Seattle and Las Vegas for the 2028-29 season, according to ESPN.
Any expansion requires the approval of at least 23 of the league’s 30 governors. The new franchises are reportedly expected to be worth between $7 billion and $10 billion each.
Seattle reacts to possible return of basketball
-----------------------------------------------
For Seattle fans, an expansion team would mark the return of professional basketball to the city after the SuperSonics left in 2008 and relocated to Oklahoma City, where the franchise became the Thunder.
“Fans have been waiting since 2008, right? When your team gets stolen, you’re so emotionally connected to the team. It’s part of your childhood, it’s part of your city, and then for them to be gone is devastating,” said Jamie Munson, owner of Simply Seattle.
Danny Ball, host of the Iconic Sonics Podcast, said the wait has been difficult but the moment feels significant.
“We want our own franchise back and so it’s been a hard 18 years, but it is an extremely exciting time to be a basketball fan in Seattle,” Ball said.
