The coach at the heart of the row is Temisan Williams, a former Arsenal Under-12s assistant coach. He provoked the Dowman family by featuring on talkSPORT to discuss Max's progression and achievements shortly after the 16-year-old became the youngest scorer in Premier League history during Arsenal's 2-0 victory over Everton.
Robert Dowman, Max's father, unleashed a scathing attack on X (formerly Twitter), declaring: "Listening to this guy Temisan Williams claiming he was any part of Max's journey is a really sad piece of attempted self-promotion."
He accused Williams of disregarding earlier requests to cease commenting about his son in public.
The father's furious outburst further minimised Williams' genuine contribution to the player, with Robert asserting: "I remember him putting the cones out at training a few times, but that's about it."
He stressed that whilst the family is thankful to numerous "fabulous coaches," Williams is "certainly not one of them."
During his radio slot, Williams had spoken glowingly about Max's "super strength" in ball carrying. Despite the criticism, Williams stood by his remarks by clarifying he was merely a "small part of his journey" as an assistant coach who monitored the youngster's development over a two-year spell at the academy.
Robert Dowman seized the moment to emphasise who he considers truly responsible for his son's progression. He commended Johnny Knight, the Arsenal scout who identified Max aged just four, describing him as the "best scout in the business" and the individual behind the player's development.
In the wake of the social media storm, Williams released a public apology. He confirmed he had contacted the family directly and declared: "Going forward, I will not be discussing Max Dowman's development."
He finished by extending his wishes for "nothing but continued success" moving forward.
The dispute unfolded during a landmark week for the Arsenal academy. Max Dowman surpassed James Vaughan's record to become the youngest ever goalscorer in the Premier League, an achievement that has attracted intense examination and nationwide media focus on his background and the coaches involved in his formative years.
