The New England Patriots have been active this offseason to upgrade their offense for quarterback Drake Maye.
New England reached the Super Bowl last season in Maye’s second season in the NFL. With the Patriots having so much success last season, New England was active this offseason, bringing in more weapons and improving the offensive line.
The Patriots' big two moves were signing Romeo Doubs to bolster the receiver position and inking star offensive guard Alijah Vera-Tucker. So, NFL analyst Mike Jones of The Athletic named Maye an offseason winner because of those two moves.
“Looking to build on last season’s breakout campaign, the Patriots quarterback received two upgrades to his supporting cast as New England replaced the aging Stefon Diggs with the ascending Romeo Doubs, and also fortified the interior of its offensive line with the signing of Vera-Tucker. Vera-Tucker has dealt with injuries, but he is indeed a talented player with elite pass-blocking skills and youth (26) on his side,” Jones wrote in an article published on Tuesday.
Protecting Maye is key as the Patriots' offensive line struggled last season, especially in the Super Bowl. So, if Maye can have more time in the pocket, it will only help him, which is why Jones called him one of the winners.
Maye threw for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions last season. He also rushed for 450 yards and four touchdowns as Maye will look to build on his MVP-caliber season in 2026.
