Segun Olubi has signed with the Las Vegas Raiders from the Indianapolis Colts.

As teams across the NFL continue to prioritize special teams upgrades early in free agency, the Las Vegas Raiders took a targeted step Monday by signing former Colts linebacker Segun Olubi.

Olubi, who recorded 50 tackles while playing a major role in the kicking game over his three full seasons with the Colts. The free agent signing addresses a clear area of need for a Raiders special teams unit that ranked near the bottom of the league, adding an experienced, production-backed presence with familiarity in high-volume special teams duties.

The acquisition of the 26-year-old Olubi was the second time in a week that Las Vegas raided the Colts for an upgrade, after earlier signing defensive end Kwity Paye.

Paye was a Colts 2021 first-round draft pick.

What Olubi Brings to the Raiders

Paye signed for $48 million over three years. The terms of Olubi’s contract were not announced, but he just completed a one-year, $1 million contract extension with the Colts. So the former undrafted free agent brings an inexpensive upgrade to a special teams unit that ranked 24th in the NFL, according to the final rankings by Sports Illustrated.

Olubi signed with the San Francisco 49ers out of San Diego State in 2022. But the 49ers released him before the 2022 season, and he was quickly signed to the Indianapolis practice squad.

After becoming a full-time player almost exclusively on special teams in 2023, Olubi recorded 26 tackles that season, followed by 12 and 11 in the next two years, respectively. One tackle in his rookie season, when he appeared for just 18 snaps over two games, gave him 50 total in his relatively brief career so far.

“Olubi made his name with Indianapolis through his work on special teams. Olubi brought the pain in this regard and put together a great career being an unsung hero,” wrote SI.com Colts correspondent Drake Wally on Monday. “In fact, 16 of Olubi’s 50 career tackles came from the special teams side of the ball. He also accrued two blocked punts in that four-year timeframe.”

Olubi Not Considered a Factor on Defense

It seems clear that the Raiders signed Olubi to bolster their special teams, which were largely ineffective in both 2025 and 2024 — scoring not a single touchdown in either season.

But there is little on the linebacker’s résumé to indicate that the Raiders would have any interest in giving him defensive snaps, barring an emergency.

“Olubi made one start in place of an injured Zaire Franklin in 2023 and played a career-high 114 defensive snaps that season, according to the Indianapolis Star‘s Joel A. Erickson on Monday. “But he’s played just 27 snaps on defense in the two years since then, and all six snaps on defense in 2025 came in mop-up duty.”

In his second and final season at San Diego State, which was also his only full season there, Olubi played in 14 games, making 53 tackles including two quarterback sacks. In the 2020 season, when he played in only seven games, Olubi did grab an interception — and he returned it 71 yards for a touchdown.

Olubi also has one interception at the NFL level. But the Raiders appear more interested in his kick coverage and blocked punts than his ability to pick off passes.
