Kevin Durant could have a rare chance to finish his career where it started, as the potential return of the Seattle SuperSonics in 2028-29 may align with his final free agency.
Current Houston Rockets star forward Kevin Durant could be heading toward unrestricted free agency – potentially for the final time in his career – just as his original team, the Seattle SuperSonics, may be on the verge of returning to the NBA.

If the league's expansion plans materialize, Durant would have a unique opportunity to come full circle and finish his Hall of Fame career in Seattle. NBA reporter Evan Sidery recently pointed out this possibility.
"For the first time, really, since 2008, I think if you're a Seattle Sonics fan, you can truly start to believe the Sonics are in the process of coming back," ESPN's Brian Windhorst said.
It was recently reported that the league's board of governors will hold a meeting to vote on exploring adding Seattle and Las Vegas franchises beginning with the 2028-29 season.
Durant, now 37, was originally selected second overall by Seattle in the 2007 NBA Draft. He experienced the franchise's relocation and rebrand, continuing his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder until 2016.

In October 2025, the 16-time All-Star signed a contract extension with the Houston Rockets that could keep him with the team through the 2027-28 season. The deal includes a player option for the second year.
Houston marks Durant's fifth NBA franchise, following stops with the SuperSonics/Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets, and Phoenix Suns.
KD won two NBA championships with Golden State in 2017 and 2018.
The SuperSonics' departure from Seattle dates back to 2008, when owner Clay Bennett relocated the franchise to Oklahoma City after failing to secure $500 million in public funding for a new arena.
The team was officially rebranded as the Thunder ahead of the 2008-09 season.
Despite their relocation, the SuperSonics remain one of the NBA's most storied franchises. From 1967 to 2008, they captured one NBA championship, three conference titles, and six division crowns.
Over the years, Seattle featured a number of legendary players, including Gary Payton, Lenny Wilkens, Shawn Kemp, Ray Allen, Rashard Lewis, Jack Sikma, Dennis Johnson, Nate McMillan, and Durant himself.
