Joao Gomes Has Already Said Which Team He Wants To Play For As Liverpool Challenge Man United For Midfielder

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes is now a “major transfer target” for Liverpool ahead of the summer, according to reports.

TEAMtalk claim that the Reds have joined Manchester United in pursuing the Brazilian international, who has also attracted interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Gomes has previously indicated which team he would prefer to join. Speaking a few years ago, when he was still playing for Flamengo, he expressed a desire to go to Anfield:

“Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have a great desire to play there.”

Wolves are open to selling Gomes

Despite a recent upturn in form, Rob Edwards’ team are unlikely to save themselves from relegation. With seven games remaining, they are 12 points from safety.

While Wolves are keen on keeping hold of certain players, they are not expected to block Gomes’s departure at the end of the season.

Considering the number of teams circling the 25-year-old, it looks like they could raise a considerable sum from offloading him this summer.

Why do Liverpool want the midfielder?

While many had assumed that the club would focus their attentions on signing one or two wingers, it appears that sporting director Richard Hughes could also add numbers in the middle of the park.

There is uncertainty surrounding the future of Curtis Jones, who seemed tempted by a move to Inter Milan during the January transfer window. The form of Alexis Mac Allister has been very concerning too.

Gomes would add steel and some much-needed energy, although there are concerns over how much he could contribute on the ball. He has just 1 goal and 1 assist to his name this season, having also picked up 11 yellow cards. He is very much an archetypal midfield destroyer.
