Manchester United face competition from elsewhere to land their transfer target this summer
Newcastle United ‘fear’ being dragged into an Alexander Isak-type transfer saga with Sandro Tonali this summer amid interest from Manchester United, according to The i Paper. The Red Devils have been linked with a move for the midfielder in the next transfer window along with the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid. His contract in the North East expires in June 2028.
Michael Carrick remains in interim charge at Old Trafford. He was named caretaker boss after Ruben Amorim’s sacking. The ex-Middlesbrough man has since made a positive impression.
Manchester United keen on Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali
Tonali has been a standout player for Newcastle over recent times. They could face a serious battle to keep hold of him down the line amid attention from elsewhere. He has been on their books since joining them back in 2023.
The 25-year-old has made 104 appearances in all competitions, 47 of which have come this term, and he has chipped in with 10 goals. Prior to his move to England, he spent three years at AC Milan and found the net on seven occasions in 130 matches for the Serie A giants. He rose up through Brescia’s academy.
United could see him as someone to replace Casemiro, who is leaving when this term ends. The Red Devils have a big decision to make as they look to bolster that particular department ahead of the next campaign. They would need to bat away interest from the likes of Chelsea, City and Real Madrid if they went for Tonali.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has recently said: “Sandro’s very happy here. He’s got a great relationship with me and his teammates and he seems really, really, happy within himself. I don’t see an issue, but I’m not in control of everything. If I knew where everything [rumours] came from I’d be wiser. But Sandro is absolutely fine. I had discussions with him yesterday. His focus is on the here and now with us.
“There’s no issue with Sandro. He’s happy and committed. But our best players will always be attracting glances from other clubs – that’s just the reality of football.”
