“Everyone in England is [impressed] too; Newcastle are after him.”

Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have also been credited with an interest in Smit over the past few months.

AZ want top dollar for the midfielder

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed that bids of up to €60m (£52m) were rejected by AZ Alkmaar during the January transfer window.

It means that Smit is likely to fetch a price above that figure if approaches are made for him at the end of the season.

Newcastle may have the funds to finance an offer, but that may only happen if one of their current midfielders departs St James’ Park this summer.

2 players have been tipped to leave Newcastle

There are serious question marks over the future of Sandro Tonali. While the Italian has not given any indication that he will force a move away from the club, like Alexander Isak did last year, his agent has made it clear that the player is open to offers.

Arsenal and Manchester City are deemed the two likeliest bidders, but Manchester United and Juventus are among the other names who have been linked with the 25-year-old. Buy a Tonali shirt from JD Sports here.

Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also been mentioned as another potential departure, although reports in Brazil suggest that the Magpies may only consider offloading him if a big offer is received from a club abroad.
