Report:£20m Chelsea star misses golden opporunity as National Team pull him out of squad for March

Filip Jorgensen has endured a difficult week. The Chelsea goalkeeper was embarrassed in Paris, and now the Denmark goalkeeper has suffered a groin injury.

Rewind a fortnight, and Jorgensen would have been excited at his prospects of game time and a place at the World Cup this summer. Robert Sanchez was dropped for the clash against Aston Villa, a 4-1 win.

Jorgensen did enough to retain his place in the starting XI against PSG. The chance to start a Champions League knockout game under Liam Rosenior, the Sweden-born Denmark star, will have been delighted.

Yet, Jorgensen flopped. At fault for PSG’s third and arguably fifth goals, if the Blues are knocked out this evening, a lot of the blame will be put on Jorgensen. Now, the goalkeeper has suffered an injury.

Denmark take on North Macedonia in March in a crucial World Cup qualifier, a game they need to win to set up a play-off final against either the Republic of Ireland or the Czech Republic a few days later.

But with Celtic veteran Kasper Schmeichel missing, Jorgensen had the chance to start in the play-off clash against North Macedonia and possibly the final play-off. But his groin injury sustained sees him miss out.

With Schmeichel and Jorgensen missing, Bold report Denmark have called up Union Berlin goalkeeper Fredrik Ronnow out of retirement. Ronnow had announced his retirement in 2024, but has been recalled.

The injury is a real blow for the £20m man, who might have retained his place in goal against Newcastle despite his errors against PSG. With Sanchez also struggling for form, this was a chance for Jorgensen.

Does Jorgensen deserve to start over Sanchez?

It was also a big opportunity for Jorgensen to prove himself as Schmeichel’s long-term successor for Denmark, and give himself a real chance of starting over the Celtic stopper if Denmark do qualify.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of PSG, Liam Rosenior said: “He felt something in his groin after the PSG game. We are getting him scanned to find out the full extent of that injury.”

But for now, there is no doubt that Jorgensen has missed a real chance to put his name forward as the no.1 goalkeeper at Chelsea at least until the summer, and Denmark’s no.1 at the World Cup.
