Chelsea willing to pay£60 million for Premier League defender

Chelsea will have to complete one of the most remarkable comebacks in Champions League history if they are to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Blues host holders Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 on Tuesday night, with the French champions boasting a 5-2 aggregate lead following the first leg in Paris last week.

Liam Rosenior’s side were also beaten 1-0 by Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday, and the Englishman will be desperate to see his side improve when they welcome PSG to Stamford Bridge.

Ahead of the match, it has emerged that Chelsea are eyeing a huge move to sign a Premier League defender.

As per Spanish outlet Fichajes, via CaughtOffside, the Blues are hoping to sign defender Michael Kayode from west London rivals Brentford this summer.

The report claims that the reigning Club World Cup champions have identified the Italian as a target as they look to bolster Rosenior’s squad at right-back, and it is also suggested that Chelsea would be willing to pay £60 million to land the defender.

Kayode, 21, joined the Bees from Serie A giants Fiorentina last year and has made an instant impact for the club.

In total he has made 48 appearances for Brentford across all competitions, and his long throws have become a useful attribute for manager Keith Andrews.

Kayode is under contract at The Gtech Community Stadium until the summer of 2030, but the report suggests that Chelsea will attempt to lure the player across west London when the transfer window opens in July.

Chelsea’s interest in Kayode likely stems from captain Reece James’ worrying injury record, with the England international set for yet another spell on the sidelined after suffering a hamstring injury this week.
