New Steelers DL Sebastian Joseph-Day Gets A Familiar Jersey Number

New Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day will wear the same jersey number he’s had for most of his NFL career. He’ll wear No. 69 for the Steelers, as announced by team Tuesday afternoon.

The team also revealed S Jaquan Brisker will wear No. 3, information he shared during his Monday press conference with reporters.

Joseph-Day hinted at the news earlier this week, replying to a tweet asking if he’d keep his No. 69.

Joseph-Day’s worn No. 69 for every team he’s played for in the NFL: the Los Angeles Rams, Los Angeles Chargers, San Francisco 49ers, and most recently with the Tennessee Titans. The only time he’s changed numbers was with the Chargers in 2023 when he sported No. 51, the number he wore in college at Rutgers.

The last Steeler to wear No. 69 in a regular season game was OG Kevin Dotson, who wore it from 2020 until he was traded ahead of the 2023 season. Other notable players to wear No. 60 include DL Gabe Rivera, the first-round pick selected instead of QB Dan Marino, and LB Jerry Hillebrand, who would go on to be replaced by LB Jack Ham.

Signed as a veteran and versatile run stuffer, Joseph-Day should rotate behind Cam Heyward and Derrick Harmon. Entering his eighth NFL season, he’s appeared in 105 games with 90 starts. Over that span, he’s recorded 314 tackles and 15.5 sacks. Last season, he tallied 41 tackles and two sacks across 17 games with the Titans. Signing with Pittsburgh in the hopes of returning to competitive football he couldn’t enjoy in Tennessee, Joseph-Day inked a two-year, $11 million deal.

A 2019 feature article noted Joseph-Day “honors” his jersey the way his father, a hard worker who commuted 2-3 hours to work each day, honored his suit.

“Seeing my father so consistent about the way he works to provide for his family really affected me as a kid in a positive sense,” Joseph-Day told NJ.com at the time. “You see what hard works like. I think that’s why I am who I am. The success that has come to me is because of seeing that as an example.”

New wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. will wear No. 11, running back Rico Dowdle No. 13, cornerback Jamel Dean No. 35, and safety Jaquan Brisker No. 3.
