Anthony Edwards will miss at least the next week after an MRI revealed right knee inflammation, the team announced Tuesday.
The guard will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks.
This week’s schedule is friendly, with three home games, all in which the Wolves will be favored.
Edwards’ defensive struggles have escalated of late, and he struggled with his shot in Sunday’s loss to Oklahoma City.
Minnesota entered Tuesday’s slate tied for fifth in the Western Conference standings, two games clear of Phoenix — Tuesday’s opponent — to dodge the play-in tournament. The Wolves are equipped to win without their best player. They entered Tuesday’s game with a 6-4 mark in the 10 games Edwards has sat.
They also won a game early in the season against Indiana in which Edwards exited just three minutes into the contest. For NBA awards purposes, Edwards had missed 11 games ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.
If he misses seven more, he will be ineligible for All-NBA honors. The Wolves are slated to play seven games over their next two weeks.
But individual accolades are on the backburner for a team that entered the season with championship aspirations and rarely met such a mark this season. If the Wolves are to make a postseason push that, in recent weeks, has looked unlikely, they will need their best player near 100% to do so.
