INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) - Notre Dame men’s basketball player Carson Towt has signed with the Indianapolis Colts to play tight end, the NFL franchise announced Tuesday.
The signing comes ahead of next month’s NFL Draft.
Towt, a power forward, has never played football — including at the college level. The 6-foot-8, 250-pound forward spent one season at Notre Dame after four years at Northern Arizona.
The Colts have previously found success converting basketball players to the NFL. Former VCU power forward Mo Alie-Cox has recorded 16 touchdowns in 125 NFL games with Indianapolis and re-signed with the team yesterday.
Despite his lack of football experience, Towt said he believes his physical style of play fits the sport.
“The things that got me to Notre Dame and carried me through my career and the things I pride myself on. I think this sport honors those things,” Towt said. “And my frame, how I developed, how I developed as a player, kind of like my play style and what I pride myself on – rebounding. A couple years ago, leading the country in rebounding, and this year, leading the ACC in offensive rebounding. I pride myself on dirty work and rebounding and being physical. So, I think football almost honors those a little bit better than basketball does.”
