Chelsea exit the Champions League
Chelsea Football Newsletter
Chelsea’s Champions League campaign was brought to a brutal, unceremonious halt as Paris Saint-Germain romped to a 3-0 win at Stamford Bridge, taking the aggregate score to 8-2.
The Blues dared to dream of an unlikely comeback after they lost the first-leg by an unrepresentative 5-2. Start well and score early in the home, and anything could be possible.
But their hopes of progression were brutally quashed by the European champions. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia beat Mamadou Sarr, the 20-year-old Champions League debutant, with uninhibited ease to slot the opener home after just six minutes to put the result effectively beyond doubt.
Bradley Barcola followed up with a goal of his own just eight minutes later, leaving Chelsea trailing by five at half-time.
The introduction of Josh Acheampong at half-time did little to inspire the listless Blues and Senny Mayulu smashed a third beyond Robert Sancehz midway through the second period.
Chelsea slowly grew into the tie and did their best to pull one back and rescue a scrap of honour, but they went confounded and exited Europe with a whimper in a mostly empty stadium - save for a lively away end.
