Liam Rosenior, the head coach of Chelsea, has confirmed that Trevoh Chalobah hurt his ankle badly during the Blues’ humiliating 0-3 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday. After colliding with a PSG player, the 26-year-old had to be carried off the pitch on a stretcher. Chelsea had already used all of their substitutions, so they had to finish the game with 10 men.
The result meant PSG advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals with a clear 8-2 aggregate victory. This was Chelsea’s worst loss in Europe since Bayern Munich beat them 7-1 over two legs in 2020. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Bradley Barcola, and 19-year-old Senny Mayulu all scored goals to give the defending champions a dominant performance. They were very good at counter-attacking all night.
Rosenior gave an update on Chalobah’s condition at his post-match interview, but it didn’t do much to calm Chelsea fans’ worries.
“Trevoh, I just asked the medical team. He’s got a high ankle sprain, so I’m praying it’s nothing too serious because we can’t lose another defender.”
The Chelsea manager’s plea shows that things are getting worse for the Blues at the back. Reece James, the captain, is already out with a hamstring injury. Levi Colwill and Filip Jorgensen are also still out, while Malo Gusto is ill. James has hurt his hamstring for the tenth time in his career, and he might have to sit out for up to two months, which could end his season.
Wesley Fofana also didn’t start against PSG because his muscles were tired. This meant that Chalobah and Mamadou Sarr, who had never played together before, had to face one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking teams. PSG took full advantage of this lack of experience, with Kvaratskhelia and Barcola constantly dribbling past and forcing mistakes from the Chelsea defence throughout the game.
Chelsea’s Growing Defensive Injury List Could Derail Their Season
If Chalobah’s ankle sprain keeps him out for a long time, Rosenior will be very short on experienced defensive players during an important part of the season. Colwill hurt his ACL during pre-season training and has missed most of the 2025–26 season. He is not likely to return until the last few weeks.
Chalobah and Fofana had become Chelsea’s first-choice centre-back pair in Colwill’s absence. Rosenior had already praised their growing partnership. That partnership is now in danger of being broken up for a long time, leaving Jorrel Hato and Tosin Adarabioyo as the only real options in central defence.
Chelsea are currently in sixth place in the Premier League and are trying to qualify for the Champions League next season. Losing another key defender could be a huge blow in the final stretch of the season.
