Chiefs’ Most Underrated Signing Was a ‘Player the Patriots Wanted To Bring Back’

The Kansas City Chiefs continued to reinforce their roster during free agency with a series of calculated moves. Among them, defensive tackle Khyiris Tonga has emerged as one of the team’s most underrated additions.

While the signing did not generate the same level of attention as other transactions, evaluators have pointed to Tonga as a quietly impactful pickup. His arrival addresses a key need along the defensive front as the Chiefs look to maintain their physical presence in the trenches.

Tonga built his reputation as a strong interior defender capable of controlling the line of scrimmage. Known for his size and strength, he has consistently contributed as a run stopper while occupying blockers and creating opportunities for teammates.

Before joining Kansas City, Tonga had drawn interest from teams looking to retain his services, including his previous organization. That level of demand underscores the value he brings, even if his contributions do not always appear in traditional statistics.

Tonga was recently named as Kansas City’s most underrated signing in free agency this year. This is detailed more in an analysis by Aaron Schatz for ESPN.

This was a player the Patriots wanted to bring back, but they couldn’t get an extension finished during the regular season. Tonga was an important part of the New England run defense as a nose tackle in 2025. He had a stop rate of 83%; in other words, 83% of his run tackles prevented a successful play for the offense. The league average for interior linemen was around 71% last season. He agreed to athree-year, $21 million contract. Oh, and he can play fullback too if the Chiefs need one.

The Chiefs’ defensive approach relies on depth and versatility, particularly along the interior line. Tonga’s ability to rotate into the lineup and provide stability against the run could prove valuable over the course of a long season.

Although the move may have flown under the radar, Tonga’s addition reflects a strategic effort by Kansas City to strengthen its foundation. If he performs as expected, the signing could stand out as one of the more important yet overlooked decisions of the team’s offseason.
