NFL Expert Names Panthers’ Most Underrated Signing in Free Agency

The Carolina Panthers made several notable moves during NFL free agency as they look to reshape their roster. Among those additions, one analyst has identified linebacker Devin Lloyd as the team’s most underrated signing.

While headline moves often draw the most attention, Lloyd’s arrival in Carolina has quietly generated optimism among evaluators. The young linebacker brings a combination of athleticism and versatility that fits well within a defense aiming to improve its overall consistency.

Tennessee Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo (85) is tackled by Jacksonville Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd (0) during the first quarter at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn., Sunday, Nov. 30, 2025.

Lloyd entered the league as a first round pick and quickly established himself as an active presence at the second level. Known for his range and ability to contribute in both run defense and coverage, he has shown the tools needed to impact multiple areas of the game.

Carolina’s defense struggled at times with consistency and playmaking, making Lloyd a potential solution to several issues. His ability to diagnose plays and move sideline to sideline could help stabilize a unit that is looking to become more reliable.

Lloyd was recently named as Carolina’s most underrated signing in free agency this year. This is detailed more in an analysis by Aaron Schatz for ESPN.

Lloyd matured into a top linebacker over the past couple of seasons with the Jaguars. Since 2024, he has recorded 3.5 sacks, 194 total tackles and 11 passes defended. The “underrated” part here is the price to add him. The Panthers got Lloyd on athree-year, $45 million deal, a real discount compared to the expected cost. Acontract forecast model from ESPN’s Seth Walder had Lloyd listed with a likely $22.5 million per year.

The Panthers’ broader offseason strategy has focused on adding talent that can contribute immediately while still offering long term upside. Lloyd fits that approach, as he remains early in his career but already possesses valuable experience at the professional level.

Although bigger names may dominate discussions around the Panthers’ offseason, Lloyd’s addition could prove to be one of the most important moves. If he delivers on his potential, Carolina may find that its most impactful signing was also its most overlooked.
