French media left impressed by one Chelsea player despite Champions League disaster

There was very little for Chelsea to shout about from their Champions League Round of 16 exit against PSG, although one player left with credit from the French media.

The Blues lost 3-0 on the night, culminating in an 8-2 aggregate defeat where the Stamford Bridge crowd began to show real frustration at the ongoing situation.

Chelsea fans began to boo Liam Rosenior for a number of decisions he made, substituting the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Cole Palmer with attention having to switch to Premier League action again.

Do you think Chelsea should sack Liam Rosenior? Or are you willing to give him more time?🤔

Reece James not being available for selection saw Andrey Santos brought into the starting side to join Fernandez and Moises Caicedo in a midfield that was dominated by their opponents.

Despite the result, L’Equipe were full of praise for the Brazilian, saying he impressed throughout the evening in West London.

They said: “Rosenior also preferred Andrey Santos to Roméo Lavia. The Brazilian, called up by Carlo Ancelotti to the national team, performed well but missed his intervention on PSG’s third goal.”

Santos joined Joao Pedro in the latest set of Brazil call ups, while Estevao Willan is being held back until he returns to full fitness.

James’ injury will likely open up more opportunities for Santos to start again, however he will be facing competition from the returning Romeo Lavia and Dario Essugo.

The Chelsea Chronicle disagree with L’Equipe

We gave Santos a 3/10 in our player ratings, only scoring higher than Mamadou Sarr, who had a nightmare before his half-time substitution.

It was certainly not one of the best displays from the Brazil international, who has enjoyed a strong spell since Rosenior came into the club.

L’Equipe’s rating could well be influenced by the fact that Santos featured for Strasbourg for 18 months in France.

The performance takes nothing away from how strong he has been in the early stages of his Chelsea career, but to say he was impressive would be very generous on a dismal night.
