From Argentina: Chelsea ‘leading the race’ to secure exciting signing

Chelsea’s interest in Valentin Barco is not new, but the context around it is starting to shift in their favour.

When Liam Rosenior arrived at Stamford Bridge in January, one of his first requests was clear. He wanted to bring Barco with him from Strasbourg. The Argentine had become a key figure under the Englishman in France, especially after being moved into a more central role.

Chelsea explored that possibility in the winter window. However, a deal did not materialise. Still, the idea never went away.

That persistence matters. Barco is no longer the same player BlueCo Group initially tracked and signed during his Brighton spell.

The 21-year-old joined Brighton in January 2024 for €10m (£8.7m) from Boca Juniors. His adaptation was difficult. He made just seven appearances and struggled to establish himself. A loan move to Sevilla followed, but that also failed to provide stability.

Everything changed with Strasbourg. Under Rosenior, Barco was repositioned. He operated as a left-sided midfielder or even deeper, as part of a double pivot. That shift unlocked his game. He began dictating tempo, progressing the ball, and contributing creatively.

Strasbourg were convinced. They made his move permanent for €10m (£8.7m) in the summer of 2025. And now, several months later, Chelsea’s original idea looks far more justified.

Season confirms Chelsea’s thinking

Valentin Barco

Valentin Barco’s current campaign has reinforced why Rosenior pushed for him.

He’s made 35 appearances in all competitions this season. In that time, he has contributed one goal and ten assists. According to Transfermarkt, he’s now valued at €25m (£21.7m).

More importantly, his role has evolved. He is no longer viewed primarily as a left-back. Instead, he operates as a creative midfielder, often responsible for progression and final-third delivery. That profile fits what Chelsea have lacked at times this season.

In addition to his raw output, Barco ranks among Strasbourg’s top chance creators this season. He averages around 2.2 key passes per game, underlining his consistent influence in the final third.

His impact is not limited to chance creation. The Argentine also posts a strong volume of progressive passes, among the highest in the squad, showing his role in building attacks from deeper areas.

He also carries the ball forward with purpose. Barco records a high volume of progressive carries per match, often driving through midfield and breaking lines with possession.

New report puts Chelsea in front

Argentine outlet Olé now report that Chelsea are ‘leading the race’ to sign Barco – if there is one to begin with, considering the BlueCo connection.

Attention has shifted towards the summer window. His performances in Ligue 1 have attracted interest from multiple clubs, but Chelsea are seen as best placed.

Obviously, the multi-club structure has already facilitated several player (and manager) movements between the sides. Now Barco increasingly looks like the next candidate to follow that path.

There is also a personal angle. Rosenior’s role in Barco’s development remains central. He gave the player continuity and redefined his position. Now, he wants to bring that version of Barco into his Chelsea squad.

Next steps in the summer

Chelsea’s failure to land Barco in January has not weakened their position. If anything, it has clarified it.

The club now have a player who has proven himself over a full season in a defined role. They also have a manager who understands exactly how to use him.

With Strasbourg part of the same ownership structure, negotiations should be more straightforward than usual. The key question is timing rather than feasibility.

If the current trajectory continues, Chelsea will be moving for a player who has grown into the role they originally envisioned.
