Newcastle United latest news: Eddie Howe’s predicted team v Barcelona as major Sandro Tonali decision made.
The Magpies head to Spain level on aggregate with Barcelona ahead of tonight’s match after being denied a famous win by a late Lamine Yamal penalty at St James’ Park last week. Howe’s side head to Spain in hope, rather than expectation, of securing a win and progressing to the quarter-finals of the competition.
Having defeated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening, they do have momentum on their side this week and Howe can welcome back Sandro Tonali to his squad after the Italian missed out on Saturday with illness. Lewis Miley, Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar, though, all miss out through injury.
Here, we take a look at the Newcastle United starting XI that Howe could name for his side’s Champions League clash against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. Do you agree with our picks? Follow us on our social media channels and let us know your thoughts there.
Newcastle United predicted XI v Barcelona
Aaron Ramsdale
Ramsdale has been installed as Newcastle United’s first-choice goalkeeper of late and after a clean sheet against Chelsea, and one so cruelly denied in the first-leg, he will likely again be asked to start at the Camp Nou.
Kieran Trippier
Tino Livramento was brilliant against Chelsea at the weekend but Trippier may be asked to start once again in a bid to protect his teammates’ minutes as well as to add leadership and experience to the team.
Malick Thiaw
Despite his late foul leading to Barcelona’s equaliser, Thiaw was very good against Barcelona last week and supported that with a top performance against Chelsea.

Dan Burn
Burn was rested at the weekend, but it’s likely that he will return to the starting XI at the Camp Nou.
Lewis Hall
Hall was simply sensational against Barcelona last week and did brilliantly against Lamine Yamal. A similar performance will be needed tonight if the Magpies want to leave Spain with a place in the last-eight.
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey has improved week on week in the Newcastle United starting XI and this will undoubtedly be his biggest test as a Magpies player against a very good Barcelona midfield.
Sandro Tonali
Howe revealed yesterday that a decision will be made on Tonali’s fitness ahead of kick-off. If the Italian is fit, then he is almost a certainty to start at the Camp Nou.
Joelinton
Joelinton’s fitness and physical prowess could be the key to success for the Magpies tonight. The Brazilian will be desperate to showcase his talents after being left out of Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad.
Anthony Elanga
Elanga’s best performances for Newcastle United have come in the Champions League. Barcelona’s high line could offer him the space he wants in behind a defence.
Anthony Gordon
Gordon will be champing at the bit to impress at the Camp Nou given that he was too ill to start the first-leg. He has been one of the Champions League’s star players this season and a goal or two tonight would send the 3,000 travelling fans barmy.
Harvey Barnes
Barnes’ goal looked like it had secured a first-leg victory for Newcastle United last week. He is so good in front of goal and his finishing instincts will be needed if the Magpies get a sniff of the Barcelona net.
