Chelsea have suffered an injury blow in the form of defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea star Trevoh Chalobah could be facing a lengthy spell out if Liam Rosenior’s prognosis proves to be correct. Chalobah was stretchered off late in the drab PSG defeat that saw the Blues slip out of the Champions League second leg without much of a fight.

Chalobah appeared to pick up a serious ankle injury, and it rarely ends well when a stretcher is required to help a player off the pitch.

Speaking after the game, Rosenior suggested that the defender had suffered a “high ankle sprain”, adding: “Praying it's nothing too serious because we can't lose another defender. We’ll obviously scan and assess him [on Wednesday]. We are hoping and praying that it’s not as bad as we first feared.”

Chalobah posted a thankful religious message on social media, suggesting he had received some sort of positive update, but a high ankle sprain is not always better than a broken ankle.

A broken ankle without complications can mean an absence of 6-8 weeks, though one with complications can keep a player out for more than three months.

A high ankle sprain almost certainly keeps a player out for six weeks, but it can stretch to up to 12 weeks. High ankle sprains require initial rest and intense strengthening rehab, with the injury a very typical setback in American Football, and it is rarely a quick return for players who suffer it.

Chelsea will be hoping Chalobah is an exception and that the sprain is only a mild one. As Rosenior mentions, the Blues have already had a tough time with centre-back depth, though it is hoped Levi Colwill can return before the end of the season.
