Manchester City are now working on signing key Chelsea player after PSG defeat - journalist

Chelsea and Manchester City both had bad nights in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Chelsea were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain, losing 8-2 on aggregate, while City were eliminated by Real Madrid.

Things could be about to get much worse for Chelsea, though, with Enzo Fernandez’s future now in serious doubt.

Who would you like to see replace Enzo Fernandez if he leaves Chelsea this summer?

Manchester City want to sign Enzo Fernandez

Speaking after Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to PSG, Fernandez did not rule out an exit in the summer. And it looks like the Etihad could be a potential destination for the midfielder.

Journalist Simon Phillips has claimed on Si Phillips Talks Chelsea that City are just one of five clubs who are working on signing Fernandez from their Premier League rivals.

The other four clubs are believed to be Chelsea’s conquerors PSG, Real Madrid, Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr. One source has told Phillips that the player is “99% sure” to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.

PSG had already shown some interest in Fernandez before they faced Chelsea, and it is no surprise to hear that he is still on their radar.

After how he performed in the first leg, a PSG bid for Fernandez feels increasingly likely. Losing the 25-year-old to the French giants, City or another club would be a huge blow for Liam Rosenior.

Fernandez has quickly become a key player under Rosenior since the former Strasbourg manager’s arrival at Chelsea at the start of January.

After Joao Pedro, the Argentine has arguably been Chelsea’s biggest goal threat, with Cole Palmer continuing to blow hot and cold.

Ultimately, it will come down to whether the Club World Cup winners want to sell Fernandez or not. He is under contract until 2032, meaning Chelsea are under no pressure to sell to City, PSG, Real Madrid or anyone else.

If the Argentina international does go, it will not be for a cheap fee. Again, he is one of Chelsea’s star players and cost the club more than £100m.
