Manchester United are seriously interested in signing Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes this summer, according to reports.
The Old Trafford side are anticipating a rebuild in the middle of the park and are firmly in the market for at least one new central midfielder.
While the likes of Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba appear to be top of the shortlist, Gomes could prove a significantly cheaper option, with Wolves reportedly placing a £44million asking price on the Brazilian.
The fee could drop even further if the Molineux side are relegated this season, as they sit rock-bottom of the Premier League standings with seven games left.

According to TEAMtalk, United are stepping up their interest in Gomes ahead of the summer, with the midfielder emerging as a major transfer target.
The Red Devils have been actively monitoring the Brazilian in recent weeks, and his recent form has only increased United’s interest.
Gomes has been instrumental in Wolves’ recent positive run of results under manager Rob Edwards, including league victories over Aston Villa and Liverpool.
The 'next level' 25-year-old has made 35 appearances for the Molineux side in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and providing three assists.
He is also attracting interest from United's Premier League rivals too in Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham.
Gomes Could Replace Departing Casemiro

United’s reported interest in Gomes is hardly surprising, given the club are actively looking to replace Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
The Brazilian midfielder has already announced he will be leaving at the end of his deal in June, putting an end to his four-year spell at Old Trafford.
Casemiro has been an important player under both former manager Ruben Amorim and current interim head coach Michael Carrick this season, managing 29 appearances across all competitions and scoring seven Premier League goals.
Only Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko (nine each) have managed more goals for United than the 34-year-old veteran this league campaign.

Amid United’s interest in Gomes, we asked ChatGPT why top Premier League clubs could be looking to add the relegation-bound Wolves midfielder to their ranks this summer:
Elite defensive aggression and ball‑winning ability – Gomes consistently ranks near the top of the Premier League for defensive duels won and tackles, giving teams a powerful presence in breaking up play and regaining possession.
Premier League‑proven physical profile – at 25, he’s already shown he can handle the intensity, pace and demands of English football, making him a safer, more plug‑and‑play midfield option for top clubs.
Balance and tactical complementarity – his blend of tenacity, energy and willingness to cover ground makes him an ideal partner for more creative or build‑oriented midfielders, helping clubs achieve balance in both defensive and transition phases.
