Man City are one of five teams keen on recruiting Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez this summer, according to reports.

Writing on his Substack, journalist Simon Phillips claimed that Pep Guardiola’s side are vying with Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, as well as Saudi Pro League sides Al-Hilal and Al-Nassr.

A source is said to have told Phillips that Fernandez is “99% sure” that he will be leaving Stamford Bridge at the end of the season.

Of course, Chelsea will have a lot to say in the matter, even if the player is keen to move on.

Man City need to reinforce the midfield

Captain Bernardo Silva could leave the Etihad when his current deal expires this summer, and there are also doubts surrounding the futures of Rodri and Mateo Kovacic, who are reaching the final twelve months of their contracts. Buy a Bernardo Silva graphic t-shirt from Printerval here.

It means adding numbers in the middle of the park will be a priority for Director of Football Hugo Viana. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson was deemed the top target until very recently, but it remains to be seen if the apparent availability of Fernandez will alter his plans.

Is signing Fernandez a realistic prospect?

If the Cityzens were preparing to pay around £100m for Anderson, then there is no doubt that they have the finances to recruit Fernandez if they do decide to switch targets.

However, a lot could hinge on the Argentinian. There are suggestions that the player is eyeing a move to La Liga, with Real Madrid seen as his ideal destination.

Whether the 15-time European champions have the resources to pay a nine-figure sum for Fernandez is another matter. What seems clear, though, is that the World Cup winner is hoping to leave London.
