Eddie Howe has moved to quell growing speculation surrounding Sandro Tonali’s future, insisting the midfielder remains “fully committed” to Newcastle United despite mounting interest from several Premier League rivals ahead of the summer transfer window.
Reports linking Tonali with moves to Manchester United, ARSENAL and Chelsea have intensified in recent days, with the Italian emerging as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. However, Howe has publicly dismissed suggestions that the 25-year-old is unsettled on Tyneside.
Speaking ahead of Newcastle’s crucial Champions League clash with Barcelona, Howe delivered a firm message. He said that, from his perspective, Tonali’s attitude has been exemplary and unaffected by external noise, describing him as “totally committed” and focused on the team’s objectives.
“I think the person who matters the most in this is Sandro. I take my lead from him,” said Howe when asked about Tonali’s future.
“All I have ever seen from him is someone who is totally committed, very much [art of the team and very selfless. He is here for the team. That is the attitude I have seen from him. Forget the noise around Sandro, he is fully committed.”
The Newcastle manager also urged the midfielder to ignore speculation, adding that such situations are often driven by external narratives rather than the player’s own intentions.
Tonali’s future has become a major talking point following comments from his agent, which appeared to suggest that a move to another elite club could form part of the player’s long-term ambitions. Those remarks have fueled widespread reports that a summer transfer could be on the horizon, particularly with clubs monitoring Newcastle’s financial position and willingness to sell.
According to recent reports, Manchester United have already identified Tonali as a key midfield target as part of a wider recruitment drive, while ARSENAL are also believed to be exploring the possibility of adding him to their squad. Chelsea, meanwhile, are understood to be among several clubs keeping close tabs on the situation as they prepare for a potential overhaul in midfield.
Despite the growing interest, Newcastle remain in a strong contractual position. Tonali is tied to the club on a long-term deal running until at least 2029, giving the Magpies significant leverage in any potential negotiations and making any deal likely to command a substantial transfer fee.
Internally, there is also confidence that the player feels a sense of loyalty to the club, particularly after the support he received during his suspension earlier in his Newcastle career. Reports suggest Tonali has reassured figures within the club that he is not actively seeking a move, even as speculation continues to build externally.
Nevertheless, the situation remains fluid. Howe has acknowledged that, ultimately, decisions over a player’s future can be influenced by multiple factors, including the player’s own ambitions and the scale of any offers that may arrive.
For now, Newcastle’s focus remains firmly on the pitch. Tonali has been a key figure in the side’s midfield when available, contributing to a campaign that has seen the club competing on multiple fronts, including in Europe.
