Could Jerry Jones get Joey Bosa to sign with the Cowboys?

It is no secret that the Dallas Cowboys want to be better in 2026. After entering this past season with the hope of bouncing back, the Cowboys had another disappointing campaign in 2025. They finished the season with an underwhelming 7-9-1 record and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. This was after they sported a 7-10 record the season before.

With how last season went for the Cowboys, they are looking to boost their roster. The team’s biggest need is a much stronger defense, and free agency provides them with a prime opportunity to strengthen it.

Cowboys president and general manager Jerry Jones also recently made it clear that the team’s defense needs to be better. While at the Grand Prix of Arlington, he said this about Dallas’ defense: “Had we played a lick of defense last year, we would’ve had ourselves, I think, a real playoff run.”

It is clear that the Cowboys need to improve their defense if they hope to be better this upcoming season. Because of this, they are now being linked to one of the most notable free agents still available on the market.

Joey Bosa Named Potential Free Agent Target for the Cowboys

In a recent article for CBS Sports, Garrett Podell took a look at five players who the Cowboys should consider targeting to boost their defense. Among the players who Podell discussed was five-time Pro Bowler Joey Bosa.

“Joey Bosa is not the same player he was in the late 2010s because of injuries, but Pro Football Focus graded him as the 10th-best edge defender with an 85.5 pass-rush grade in 2025. Bosa could help stabilize any team’s pass rush, and he led the NFL with five forced fumbles. He would probably be the most expensive bargain-bin find among these five in the second wave of free agency,” Podell wrote.

With the Cowboys’ defense needing a boost, it would make sense if they brought in an edge rusher with a resume like Bosa. He would have the potential to be a strong addition to Dallas’ roster and would give them another veteran to help mentor their younger players in the process.

Bosa spent this past season with the Buffalo Bills, and he had a solid year. In 15 games with the Bills during the 2025 campaign, he recorded 5.0 sacks and 29 combined tackles. Furthermore, as Podell noted, Bosa had an NFL-leading five forced fumbles on the year. With numbers like these, he would certainly be an impactful addition to the Cowboys’ roster if signed.

Cowboys Would Have Competition for Bosa

If the Cowboys were to make a push for Bosa, there is no question that they would have competition. Bosa is among the most notable free agents still available for the taking, so teams in need of defense help should have him on their radar. The San Francisco 49ers are one specific team that has been heavily linked to Bosa so far this offseason.

Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see if the Cowboys end up making a push for Bosa. The fit looks good on paper, but time will tell if they can get him from here.
