Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has criticised Chelsea for allowing defender Lewis Hall to leave the club, claiming the young full-back has developed into “one of the best players in world football” since joining Newcastle United.
Hall, a product of CHELSEA’s academy, departed Stamford Bridge in 2023 in a deal that initially saw him move on loan to Newcastle before the transfer was made permanent. At the time, the decision was viewed as part of Chelsea’s wider squad overhaul, but Redknapp believes the club may now regret letting such a promising talent slip away.
Speaking in recent media appearances, Redknapp said Chelsea had failed to recognise Hall’s long-term potential, pointing to the defender’s rapid rise on Tyneside. Explaining his decision to pick Hall in his Premier League Team of the Week after Newcastle’s 1-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, Redknapp told BetVictor: ‘Lewis Hall is currently one of the best left-backs in world football.
‘What a week he’s had! He kept Lamine Yamal very quiet and then cruised it back at Stamford Bridge. Right now, the left-back spot for England looks like it will be his to lose.’
The defender has become a key figure under Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, earning praise for his composure on the ball, tactical intelligence and versatility. Comfortable operating as a left-back or in midfield, Hall has featured prominently in Newcastle’s domestic and European campaigns this season.
His performances have also drawn attention at international level, with Hall increasingly being tipped for a regular role in the England senior squad after progressing through the youth ranks.
For Newcastle, Hall’s emergence represents a significant success in recruitment and player development. The club has invested heavily in young talent since its ownership change, and Hall is widely seen as one of the standout examples of that strategy paying off
CHELSEA, meanwhile, have continued to prioritise squad rebuilding in recent seasons, bringing in a number of high-profile signings while also allowing several academy graduates to depart. While the club has enjoyed success in developing youth talent historically, including players such as Reece James and Mason Mount, Hall’s departure has increasingly been viewed as a questionable decision in hindsight.
At Newcastle, Hall has thrived in a more stable environment, benefiting from consistent coaching and a clearly defined role within Howe’s system. His ability to contribute both defensively and in attack has made him a valuable asset as the club continues to push for European qualification.
Despite Redknapp’s criticism, CHELSEA are unlikely to dwell on past decisions as they focus on their ongoing rebuild. However, Hall’s continued development will serve as a reminder of the fine margins involved in talent retention at the highest level.
