‘We’re Working On That’: Cam Heyward Hints At Conversations With Aaron Rodgers

It may feel like the same old Aaron Rodgers waiting game from the outside, but this time is different inside the Pittsburgh Steelers’ building. With several players now having established relationships with Rodgers, there’s a more direct line of communication. It sounds like Cam Heyward is using his to try to lure him back for one more season.

“I told him…No I can’t tell y’all. But we’re working on that,” Heyward said on his Not Just Football podcast, teasing conversations behind the scenes between the two 2025 team captains. “I’m not using my quote I used last year, I’ll tell you that. I hope he comes back.”

It was around this time last year that Heyward dropped one of the best lines of the offseason on the Aaron Rodgers waiting game.

“Either you want to be a Pittsburgh Steeler or you don’t. That’s simple. That’s the pitch,” Heyward said on his podcast last March. “If you want me to recruit, that’s the recruiting pitch.”

This year obviously strikes a different tone. Rodgers has kept in contact with Mike McCarthy and multiple of his friends inside the building. Instead of the optics of an outsider stringing the Steelers along for months on end, Heyward has a direct line of contact with Rodgers this time around.

It was on Heyward’s podcast last training camp that the idea of bringing Rodgers back for a second season was first brought up. DK Metcalf was already laying the groundwork to recruit Rodgers for one more year before the 2025 season had even begun. It was a “maybe” at the time.

According to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo, the Steelers truly don’t know which way Rodgers is leaning. And Rodgers didn’t clear much up on his hour-long interview on The Pat McAfee Show earlier this month. He didn’t even have a contract offer on his table at the time.

With the draft coming up in five weeks, that decision should be coming sooner rather than later. But rest assured several players inside the locker room, including Cam Heyward, are working on it.
