ESPN's Dan Orlovsky has awful NFL Draft suggestion for Dolphins after Jaylen Waddle trade

The Miami Dolphins have been one of the most interesting teams this offseason, with their roster teardown as new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan takes control of the roster.

Their latest move was the blockbuster Jaylen Waddle trade, landing a first and third rounder from the Denver Broncos for Waddle. There's been plenty of speculation after that trade, but one recent take would be a complete disaster for Miami.

Dan Orlovsky on ESPN made an awful suggestion for the Dolphins after their Waddle trade. Orlovsky, the former NFL quarterback, is suggesting the Dolphins draft Ty Simpson early in the draft despite their Malik Willis signing.

"But it does make me think," Orlovsky said. "These are great places for the Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson. Arizona would be one, Miami would be another. I know they just paid Malik Willis, I know that. But, given the timeline, and given just the style of the quarterback with the style of the offense in Miami under this regime, they should do their homework and entertain drafting Ty Simpson in Miami."

The Dolphins spent $67.5 million on Willis over the next three years, investing in him to be their starting quarterback despite having $99.2 million in dead cap space thanks to cutting Tua Tagovailoa this offseason.

With all of their needs currently on the roster after the Waddle trade, wide receiver, edge rusher, cornerback, and offensive line are still needed.

Currently, the Dolphins have the 11th and 30th picks in the 2026 NFL Draft. They can take one of those positions early and begin to reshape the roster going forward.

But, taking Simpson, a quarterback who needs a lot of development, early in the draft would be a complete disaster for Miami.

Not only would they be wasting an early draft pick on a position that will be a backup at best to begin the year, even if Simpson is a good pick, but there are too many needs all across the roster to justify spending a premium asset on a quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons, rightfully, caught a lot of flak from fans and the media for their Kirk Cousins and Michael Penix Jr. decisions in the same offseason.

It was an unquestioned mistake. The Dolphins making that same mistake only a few years later would be an awful decision from the front office.

This suggestion from Orlovsky would be an awful outcome for the Dolphins. There might not be a worse way to use one of their premium picks in the upcoming class than drafting Simpson after spending on Willis.

Of course, if Simpson falls to the third or fourth round, then he'd be worth the pick. But, with all of the needs the Dolphins have, and the Willis signing, there's little reason to even consider Simpson early in the draft.
