Simon Jordan insists Chelsea's trophies under Roman Abramovich must come with asterisk

Simon Jordan has hit out at the 'backwards mentality' of Chelsea supporters who continually clamour for Roman Abramovich.

The Russian's name was chanted by a section of Blues fans at Stamford Bridge during their 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday night that sealed their exit from the Champions League.

For some supporters, Abramovich's presence serves as a reminder for the club's glory years which coincided with his ownership.

Under Abramovich, who was famously trigger-happy when it came to sacking managers, Chelsea won a staggering 19 major trophies.

However, his 19-year tenure was brought to a premature end when he was sanctioned by the UK government in March 2022 amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

The sanctions ultimately forced Abramovich to sell Chelsea to a consortium led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for an eye-watering £4.25billion.

Ghosts of Chelsea's past

Although Abramovich no longer has any ties to the club, his shadow remains large after the Blues were slapped with a suspended one-year transfer ban and a £10.75million fine for breaching Premier League rules on payments to agents between 2011 and 2018, which was during the Russian's stint in charge.

The new Chelsea ownership self-reported the breaches, some of which are understood to have likely flown under the radar had they not been pointed out to the Premier League.

Despite the acknowledgement from the ownership that Chelsea blatantly flaunted the rules during the Abramovich era, it didn't stop some Blues supporters honouring the Russian's name.

It is something talkSPORT co-host Jordan, a former owner at Crystal Palace, could not wrap his head around.

Jordan even went as far as claiming Chelsea's entire success during Abramovich's tenure should come with an asterisk given they 'broke the system.'

Jordan slams 'backwards mentality' of Blues fans

He said on the White and Jordan show: "You've got people singing for an owner whose motivation for running the football club was his own.

"Spent lots of money to buy your football club, to manufacture it into a better football club and cheated whilst doing it.

"And you're singing to have him back? I mean, what do you do with that sort of mentality? You can't do anything.

"So Liam Rosenior and whoever is in charge can do nothing with that backward mentality of celebrating somebody that has ultimately diminished your football club in most people's eyes.

"If you want to talk about asterisks, which I don't like, if you want to get into that territory, you now have to asterisk Chelsea because it's been proven beyond doubt that Chelsea cheated to achieve outcomes.

"What do you say to that?"

Elite club, or elite cheats?

Jordan's tirade continued as he claimed Chelsea were not an elite club, but merely 'elite cheats'.

He remarked: "Everyone looks at Chelsea, and they'll look at Manchester City if the same things happen to them and go, 'You're not real.'

"They thought that previously, didn't they? I said it before, a manufactured football club.

"Your real place was behind electric fences in the second division.

"You've manufactured a place because of somebody else's money.

"But behind that, you're not an elite football club. What you were was elite cheats."
