As the Green Bay Packers currently stand, they would be a potential Super Bowl contender in the NFC. However, there are major questions facing the team at this point in the offseason.
Following the loss of several key players from the 2025 roster in free agency and via trade, the Packers have yet to make many major additions. They have signed Javon Hargrave and Skyy Moore in free agency, while also acquiring Zaire Franklin in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts.
All three of those additions will have a chance to play a key role for Green Bay in 2025. That being said, there are other needs that must be addressed.
One of those needs comes at the quarterback position.
The Packers saw former backup quarterback Malik Willis leave town in free agency to sign a three-year, $67.5 million contract with the Miami Dolphins. They will need to bring in a replacement behind Jordan Love.
Green Bay Packers Connected to Shocking Potential Trade With Bitter Rival
Keeping that need in mind, Green Bay has been mentioned in a potential shocking trade idea. The suggestion came from former NFL quarterback and current analyst Robert Griffin III.
Griffin name-dropped the Packers as a potential landing spot for Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy if they choose to move on after signing Kyler Murray.
Here is a the video of Griffin sharing his thoughts on the situation:

The Minnesota Vikings need to trade JJ McCarthy after signing Kyler Murray.
McCarthy, who was the Vikings’ starter to begin the 2025 NFL season, was unable to prove that he could be a long-term franchise quarterback. He struggled to stay healthy and ended the season playing in 10 games and completing 57.6 percent of his passes for 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.
He also chipped in with 181 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
The idea of McCarthy being traded from Minnesota to Green Bay would be a shock. Matt LaFleur could work wonders for the young signal caller, but seeing the bitter rivals come together on a deal involving the 2024 No. 10 overall pick is very unlikely.
McCarthy Would Be a Perfect Option for the Packers
While the idea is a bit far-fetched, McCarthy would be an excellent addition for the Packers.
At the end of the day, the Vikings’ price tag would almost certainly be too high for Green Bay. The need for a backup quarterback is clear, but Brian Gutekunst and the Packers’ front office won’t want to invest too heavily with Love being the franchise signal caller.
Should the price tag be right, McCarthy is exactly the kind of developmental young player that LaFleur thrives working with. He would provide excellent insurance in case Love went down with injury. That is something Green Bay has seen in each of the last two years.
Expect to hear more rumors about the Packers’ search for a new backup quarterback. Griffin thinks McCarthy could be a fit, but fans shouldn’t expect to see that move happen.
