Miami Hurricanes edge Rueben Bain Jr. ranks 7th on Daniel Jeremiah's top 50 NFL Draft prospects of 2026.
The Commanders entered the 2026 offseason with severalpositional questions across the roster. Throughout the first two months of the offseason, general manager Adam Peters and his team have responded with several answers. Over the first two weeks of the NFL Free Agency period, the Commanders have signed13 new contracts. Several of their new free agent additions have focused on the defensive side of the football. This includesdefensive ends Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, and Charles Omenihu,defensive tackle Tim Settle,linebackerLeo Chenal,cornerback Amik Robertson, andsafety Nick Cross.
This attention to defense has led many to believe that the Commanders will now focus on addressing the offense in the first round of the NFL Draft. However, NFL Media Analyst Daniel Jeremiah has them going in a different direction.
In Jeremiah’slatest mock draft, he has the Commanders landing Miami Hurricanes edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. with the seventh overall pick.

The move may have fans scratching their heads, given that it would address an area Washington has already invested heavily in this offseason. However, Jeremiah provides his reasoning in his explanation.
“Washington was aggressive to fill needs at edge rusher in free agency,” Jeremiah acknowledged. “Bain has the versatility to play from the edge on early downs and then slide inside in sub packages, making him a nice complement to Odafe Oweh and K’Lavon Chaisson.”
Selecting Bain Jr. also makes a lot of sense when considering Adam Peters’ background in the NFL.
Adam Peters’ Past Signals Why The Commanders Could Draft Bain Jr.

Adam Peters worked as anassistant general manager with the 49ers from 2021 to 2023, and before that, he spent four seasons as their vice president of player personnel. From 2019-2023, the 49ers went54-29 as an organization. In this span, Peters helped them build one of the most dominant defensive units in football. A defense that was led by their elite front-seven rotation. Nick Bosa was the anchor, and around him, the 49ers displayed a wealth of rotational talent. Pieces like Arik Armstead, Clelin Ferrell, Samson Ebukam, Dee Ford, Charles Omenihu, Javon Kinlaw, and Solomon Thomas are all big-name players who have rotated around the 49ers’ defensive line in that span.
Before his time with the 49ers, Peters spent eight seasons with the Denver Broncos in various scouting roles. There, he watched the Broncos build one of the most furious defenses in NFL history. TheBroncos’ defensive line was led by All-Pro edge rusher Vonn Miller, Pro Bowl edge rusher DeMarcus Ware, and other key rotational pieces like defensive end Derek Wolfe and defensive tackle Malik Jackson.
Peters’ background, helping to build these dominant defensive units led by their disruptive line rotations, makes adding another pass-rush piece in the draft understandable.
Rueben Bain Jr. Was A Game-Wrecker in College
The Commanders’ defensive line would become one of the league’s biggest problems if Bain Jr. were added into the mix. Pro Football Focus had Bain Jr. graded as thethird-best edge in college football last year. He collected54 total tackles, 9.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception in 2025. Bain Jr., along with fellow projected first-round defensive lineman Akheem Mesidor, helped turn Miami’s defense into one of the most dangerous and disruptive units in college football. Pairing him with Oweh, Chaisson, and Omenihu could have similar results at the pro level.
While the Commanders could certainly opt to go another direction with their first-round pick, adding Bain Jr. would turn an expected strength into a certified problem for opposing teams.
